How to Remove Stains from a Sofa: 7 Stain Types and Professional Methods

A stain on your sofa is one of the most common problems BestClean clients contact us about. In 7 years of operation, we’ve cleaned thousands of sofas and we know: each type of stain requires its own approach. In this article, we’ll explain how to act when a stain appears and when it’s worth calling a professional.

    The golden rule: act fast

The faster you start removing a stain, the higher the chance of success. A fresh stain means a 90% probability of complete removal. Dried and set-in stains drop to 60-70%. But even old stains often respond to professional treatment.

What NOT to do: Don’t rub the stain! Blot it with a clean cloth from the edges toward the center. Rubbing pushes the contamination deeper into the fabric fibers and spreads the stain.

    1. Coffee and tea stains

Coffee contains tannins — natural dyes that are quickly absorbed into fabric. Blot a fresh stain with a napkin, then treat with a vinegar solution (1 tablespoon per glass of water). For old stains, professional extraction with enzyme products is needed — exactly what we do during our cleaning process.

    2. Wine stains

Red wine is one of the trickiest contaminants. Anthocyanins (grape pigments) penetrate fibers within minutes. Immediately cover the stain with salt — it will absorb some liquid. Don’t use hot water — it sets the pigment. During professional cleaning, we use special oxidizers that break down pigment molecules without damaging the fabric.

    3. Urine stains (children and pets)

The most common issue in families with small children and pets. Urine contains uric acid, which crystallizes when dried and produces a persistent odor. Regular cleaning products don’t break down uric acid — enzyme-based products are required.

At BestClean, we use professional enzyme products from the USA (Chemspec) that completely break down uric acid. In 95% of cases, both the stain and odor are completely removed in a single visit.

    4. Blood stains

Blood contains hemoglobin protein, which coagulates when heated. Therefore, you must never use hot water — only cold. Rinse a fresh stain with cold water and soap. For dried stains, a hydrogen peroxide solution (3%) works, but first test on an inconspicuous area — peroxide may bleach the fabric.

    5. Grease stains (food, oil, cosmetics)

Grease doesn’t dissolve in water, so simple rinsing won’t help. Cover a fresh stain with talcum powder, cornstarch, or baking soda — they absorb grease. Leave for 15-20 minutes, then carefully collect. For professional removal, we use special solvents that emulsify grease without damaging the upholstery.

    6. Ink and marker stains

Oil-based ink (ballpoint pen) is removed with alcohol-based products. Apply a small amount of isopropyl alcohol to a cotton pad and blot the stain. Water-based markers are easier — a soapy solution is sufficient. Permanent markers require professional dry cleaning with special solvents.

    7. Stains of unknown origin

If you don’t know what caused the stain — don’t experiment. The wrong product can set the stain, making it even harder for a professional to remove. Better to call us — we’ll assess the situation for free via WhatsApp photo and advise whether to try yourself or call a technician.

    When to call a professional?

We recommend calling professionals if the stain is older than a day, if it’s urine or blood, if the upholstery is a delicate material (velour, silk, genuine leather), or if you’ve already tried removing the stain yourself without success.

Sofa cleaning at BestClean starts from 45 EUR for a two-seater. The price includes a home visit, professional treatment of all stains, deep extraction, and disinfection. We work 7 days a week from 8:00 to 21:00 and visit all of Riga and surrounding areas for free.
